All minor dependent children, under age 18 who have not received a High School or General Education Diploma (GED) are required to attend school full-time as a condition of eligibility for TANF.
A minor child is considered a dependent child during the entire month of the child’s 18th or 19th birthday and will retain student status for the entire month provided the child has attended school for any part of that month. A minor dependent child is considered in regular attendance for periods in which the individual is not in school because of official vacation, illness, convalescence, or family emergency if the plan is to continue training when the event that prompted the interruption has run its course.
There may be some reasons when a minor dependent child may have good cause for not attending school. Some reasons, applicable only to minor dependent children, are:
-
Temporary illness;
-
Disability, as verified by medical evidence; or
-
Incapacity, as verified by medical evidence.
